Money collected from industry for carbon dioxide offsets is funding research into novel ways to reduce biological sources of greenhouse gas emissions.

Maybe not beano for burping cows, but certainly bio char for water filtration holds promise.

Dr. Susan Wood-Bohm of the Biological Greenhouse Gas Emissions Program explains.

DR. SUSAN WOOD-BOHM: We have some projects that are being developed right now. One that looks for example at the role that some of the waste stream materials from forestry might offer in developing new products, One that looks specifically at bio-char which is a product that comes from a high temperature and pressure conversion of the tops and branches that are not used by the forest industry. And when converted into bio char might act as an excellent filtration tool, for some of the waste water that is used by our oil and gas industries.

Dr. Susan Wood-Bohm says the Biological Greenhouse Gas Management Program will soon announce a series of research projects.
