Alberta Innovates Bio Solutions is taking on Mother Nature to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from biological sources.

This includes things like the decomposition of plants and a little excess tummy gas from cows.

Dr. Susan Wood-Bohm is executive director of the Biological Greenhouse Gas Management Program.

DR. SUSAN WOOD-BOHM: The program that AI Bio is managing is actually being funded by the Climate Change and Emissions Management Corporation. The program is one which will support research and development in the area of biological emissions reductions and also looking at the opportunities for biological carbon sequestration because the other side of the coin. All of the carbon that exists on earth exists there, biological carbon, exists because of the activity of plants through photosynthesis So there is also the opportunity to use the plants we have in the province to help us sequester even more carbon out of the atmosphere.

Dr. Susan Wood-Bohm’s group will invest 8.4 million dollars over the next three years on research projects to reduce biological greenhouse gas emissions.
