The push to green our economy as a way to fight climate change is opening doors for new companies like Native Roofs of Calgary.

This company designs green roofs for both residential and commercial buildings.

That means picking out plants instead of shingles for the rooftop.

Alex Court is the Operations and Marketing Manager for Native Roofs.

ALEX COURT:
One of the big benefits of the green roof is  improving your energy efficiency.  So we have a green roof on our offices and we were able to do a before and after green roof case.  And we were able to see that  there was continued energy efficiency throughout the year.  In our case we were saving about 3600 dollars a year in electricity.   But we looked also at the cost of roof replacement.  A traditional roof would need to be replaced every 15 to 17 years, but the green roof actually extends the lifespan of the roof to about 40 years.  So that combined with energy savings you would pay off the cost of the initial installation and the ongoing maintenance associated with a green roof in about 15 years.

Alex Court says the two main considerations for adding a green roof are structural strength of the building, and developing a maintenance plan.
