There’s a cost to implementing  environmental sustainability.

So what’s in it for the farmer?  What are the trade-offs?  And how do farmers make decisions that have long term impacts on land management?

Those are questions economist Dr. Marian Weber with Alberta Innovates is investigating for an ecosystem
services study at Indian Farm Creek in southern Alberta.  

DR MARIAN WEBER: 
What are the effects on their business risk management strategy?  Does that reduce the options values on their land and how they might want to use it in the future? Will that lead to intensification of the way they use land on other parts of the farm and actually kind of offset or damper some of those benefits?  And would they require  additional compensation then  to keep habitat intact for long periods of time relative to short periods of time?  Once we understand what the farmers would need to be compensated to participate in these markets, they would also be participating in this exchange and clearinghouse.  We would be incorporating their behaviors and information, the lengths of contracts,  the different management actions that are in place,
