There’s a new book that delves into a half century of soil reclamation in Alberta.

It’s called Footprints: The Evolutiion of Land Conservation and Reclamation in Alberta.

Calgary writer Robert Bott is one of the book’s editors.

ROBERT BOTT:
Well there’s general principles of which the foremost is preserving the soil.  The soil is just an incredibly valuable resource. And one of the big steps in this story is the progressive movements, especially since 1983, to save topsoil.   If you look at a construction project or a pipeline or something these days, you will see different stockpiles of soil next to the site.  And one of those is the topsoil.
And that is just teeming with life.  If you looked at it under a microscope, you would be amazed at how much happens in the top 30 centimeters of the earth beneath us.

Robert Bott says legislation governing soil reclamation in Alberta dates backto 1963.  The book covers industrial activity for coal mines, oil sands, pipelines and well sites.
