Greg Brooke has been with the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute almost since its inception.

Working first as a field technician, he helped in the development of  protocols that govern how plants and animals are sampled across the province.

These days, Greg is team lead for field operations at the ABMI’s Monitoring Centre.
That puts him in charge of the day to day logistics and field operations.

GREG BROOKE:  We are preparing right now for winter field work which starts February 16th where we deploy autonomous bird recorders and cameras to trap mammals, and we’re still preparing for summer field work.  It takes as long to prepare for the summer field work as it does to do it.

Greg expects to hire 34 biologists to conduct the summer field work in forests, fields, and wetlands across the province.  That’s where the scientific protocols come in.

GREG BROOKE:  Consistency is huge and we spend a lot of time training and guiding our summer technicians to do things over and over again consistently so that it can be reassessed again in five years the same way it was done previously.

Thanks today to the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute.
