Family Integrated Care is a new study which will focus on the families of premature infants.  In particular, how to better involve the parents and family in the hospital care of these babies.

This should help in the developmental progress of the infants and better prepare the parents for when the babies go home.

Dr. Karen Benzies is a professor at the University of Calgary and a nursing researcher with the Cumming School of Medicine.

DR KAREN BENZIES:
And it’s one thing to capture hospital costs and length of stay and how families are doing and how babies are doing in hospital.  But really, we need to know how these babies are doing when they go home.  So we will contact the families when their baby is two months old to check and see how the parents are managing, how the mom is feeling, and then developmentally how the baby is doing.  How many times the baby became sick and needed to go to the hospital again.

Dr. Karen Benzies hopes that with additional funding her team will be able to follow the preterm infants and their families for up to 18 months.
