Mike Kelly is well known for his many years advocating for better environmental management.

This includes his work with the Clean Air Strategic Alliance, the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy, and as an environment and safety manager with TransAlta.

Currently Mike is an advisor to WaterSmart, a not for profit organization that manages the Alberta Water Portal.

At a recent symposium hosted by the Climate Change and Emissions Management  Corporation, Mike Kelly presented the final report on a project linking climate change and water concerns in southern Alberta.

MIKE KELLY:   There’s about 80 years of data on each of the three river systems, What we did is we took that historic data so that would show us how much water actually came down the river in each of those 80 years.  And then we applied to that the current demand and forecast demand.  And you can build all that into an operational model.  We did one river system at a time.  And then the final stage of the project was combining them all into one single model so that we can look at the interactions among the river systems.

According to Mike Kelly, the study showed even slight changes to current systems and infrastructure will help mitigate future extreme droughts and floods.
