Changing environmental standards and the rapid advancement of climate change is putting pressure on industry to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

A major target is coal fired generators like that at Capital Power’s Genesee plant.

Darren Alessandrini is Senior Manager of Natural Resources and Business Development for Capital Power.  He explains how his company is adapting to change.

DARREN ALESSANDRINI:   So that means we have to look at all sorts of different technologies all the time to try and improve our, our efficiency and reduce the amount of CO2 that we produce.   So that is an ongoing process.  We’re looking at ways to perhaps blend a biomass product which is CO2 neutral into the coal feed.  So reducing the amount of coal that we burn.  Perhaps using more natural gas which has half the CO2 intensity of coal. All the way to potentially conversion to natural gas as an option.  Having said that, though, it’s very clean coal that we burn at Genesee.  It’s very low in elements of environmental concern like sulphur and mercury.

Darren Alessandrini says Alberta coal averages point 2 percent sulphur, compared to other countries where sulphur content can be as high as 5 percent.
