Capital Power operates the Genesee coal mine and power plant southwest of Edmonton.

Since 1988, the company has reclaimed 2100 acres to agricultural land.  It’s also won several environmental awards for its mine reclamation efforts.

George Greenhough is the Manager of Land Services at Genessee.

As he explains, the company is now taking a different approach by reclaiming land to forest cover.

GEORGE GREENHOUGH:  We realize that the area prior to mining had patches of trees, natural forest, little ponds, wetlands that were left behind by the farmers.  And we know that there’s changes going to be required with the way we’re doing mining and reclamation.  So we’ve taken the step probably five years ago to start diversifying our reclamation program.  Not that we were required by our regulator to do so at that time. So we felt we would try to get ahead of the curve and figure out how to do some reforestation work and recreate some wetlands.

According to George Greenhough, Capital Power is hosting several research projects to help in the reforestation of the Genesee mine.
