Looking ahead to its next fifty years, Syncrude is already researching alternative technologies for oil sands production.

Reducing energy use and progressive reclamation are also hot topics.

R&D manager Glen Rovang says the company is one of Canada’s top research funders.

Developing partnerships with universities and other organizations is high on Syncrude’s research agenda.

GLEN ROVANG:  We are one of Canada’s top fifty  R&D spenders.  We do work with those  service providers both government based and industry based and private based that can help us out and offer value.  We also have a relationship with the University of Saskatoon and as you mentioned, the Light Source Synchrotron.  But University of Calgary, University of Western Ontario and the list goes on.  It leverages the resources we have and that collaboration expands everybody’s knowledge base.  We’ve found it so incredibly successful working with all these different folks.

According to Glen Rovang, research partnerships are helping Syncrude fill knowledge gaps on reclamation, hydrology, and tailings issues.
