Professor Mohamed Gamal El-Din is an international expert in wastewater treatment.

He currently holds the NSERC Senior Industrial Research Chair in Oil Sands Tailings Water Treatment at the University of Alberta.

Dr Gamal El-Din is taking a holistic, multi-disciplinary approach to cleaning up tailings water in a sustainable manner.

DR MOHAMED GAMAL EL-DIN:
In our research the obstacles or the challenges are how to take this water which is quite a complex matrix –  it has a lot of different constituents in it – and use different approaches, treatment technologies that are going to be cost effective.  And not only cost effective from economical considerations, but also we’re trying to look into basically treatment technologies that don’t require a lot of electrical power, for example.  So that’s why it’s also looking at things from a holistic point of view because some treatment technologies might require a lot of energy.  So we’re trying to find ways of treating this water with minimal impact on the environment,  The challenge is how to treat this water, that is one of the most complex matrixes that I have ever dealt with, in a safe and economical and sustainable way.

Dr. Gamal El-Din’s research draws from engineering, artificial intelligence, solar energy and microbiology.
