Alberta has the highest rate of entrepreneurship in Canada.

That’s one of several findings in a survey conducted for GEM,  the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor.

Dr. Peter Josty heads the GEM Canada team and is also executive director for THECIS, The Centre for Innovation Studies.

His group has recently released the GEM Alberta report which compares entrepreneurship amongst the provinces.

DR PETER JOSTY:  There are five particular areas that make Alberta really very distinctive in Canada. The very first one is just the high level of entrepreneurship.  The level of entrepreneurship in Alberta is about 50 percent greater than the Canadian average.    If you look at the theory of some of the previous research, the Alberta numbers should actually be very low because a lot of research has shown that the rate of entrepreneurship increases with the unemployment rate.  If you look across Canada,  Alberta has one of the lowest rates of unemployment and yet the highest rate of entrepreneurship.  So that’s certainly contrary to some of the previous research.

Dr. Peter Josty says the GEM survey also shows Alberta has a very high level of female entrepreneurship.
