Only 10 percent of people with back pain actually require serious intervention like surgery.

SpineAccess Alberta is a new program to fast track the evaluation of spinal injuries.

Dr. Linda Woodhouse explains how the program can channel patients towards appropriate care in a timely, cost effective manner.

DR LINDA WOODHOUSE:
And it’s actually pretty easy when you’re looking at backs and individuals with back pain to sort out which individuals are the 10 percent and which are the 90 percent. So we have a team from across all of Alberta, that’s comprised of rheumatologists, people in rehabilitation medicine, chiropractors, physio-therapists, orthopedic surgeons, all working together to say, how do we create a model so that we call green flags, that’s individuals who should go down the path this way. Yellow flags, something to be cautious about. And red flags, oops, this one really needs to go quickly to see a specialist. And that’s how we’re identifying and educating individuals to get them to the right provider to get treatment.

Dr. Woodhouse says funding for SpineAccess Alberta comes from PRIHS, Partnership for Research and Innovation in Health Systems.
