The new Environment Gallery at the Telus World of Science in Edmonton now has $500,000 in support from Syncrude.

The gallery has lots of interesting displays and hands on activities covering everything from recycling to climate, water chemistry to marine life, and yes, the environmental science behind oils sands production.

Brenda Crickmore
is a researcher and senior analytical advisor at Syncrude.

As she explains, increasing people’s scientific literacy is the underlying focus of the Syncrude Environment Gallery.

BRENDA CRICKMORE:
I think our society needs people who are scientifically literate. Certainly today more than ever, lots of the issues that people will be asked to make determinations about are based in science and technology. And they are going to need to make those decisions based on understanding and knowledge, rather than on emotion. I think it’s really important to build that science literacy in our entire population. So it encourages people to think in a scientific way. To look at how scientists have thought about issues.

Brenda Crickmore says these hands on galleries also spark young minds to think about science as a career.
