People with diabetes often develop peripheral neuropathy in their feet and limbs.

For most patients, the pain is excrutiating.

Dr. Cory Toth
is a neurologist and Alberta Innovates Health Solutions Clinical Investigator at the University of Calgary.

He has just finished a study which indicates a generic drug called Nabilone could be very helpful in managing pain for diabetics.

DR. CORY TOTH:
Over time we’ve learned that it actually works through cannabinoid receptors. There’s a lot of interest in people using things like marijuana and cannabis now. And marijuana and cannibis, depending on how you take it, could can be associated with a lot of different side effects. It could lead to low testosterone levels in men. It could lead to features of psychosis. Then on top of that, if you’re smoking marijuana, it may have an influence upon your lungs as well. So we’re looking as Nabilone as an alternative that can still act on those pathways on the body, but not necessarily have those particular side effects. And the studies to date with Nabilone have not demonstrated those particular side effects.

Dr. Toth is educating physicians across western Canada about the new use for Nabilone in managing diabetic pain.
