Young women who suffer with inflammatory bowel disease are often afraid to get pregnant.

But thanks to funding from Alberta Innovates Health Solutions, there’s a new clinic at the University of Calgary especially for expecting moms with the disease.

According to gastroenterologist Dr. Cynthia Seow, inflammatory bowel disease often subsides during pregnancy.

The trick, she says, is to counsel women on getting their disease under control before conceiving.

DR CYNTHIA SEOW:
We don’t know the exact cause of inflammatory bowel disease, but we know certainly that there are potential precipitants of the disease such as smoking. So we would encourage them not to smoke. And that would be a general message for any pregnant woman anyway. We would encourage them to be compliant with their medications. We would advise them about the safety of those medications during pregnancy. And also tailor the medications so we can get the right dose and the right medications for them that prior to them being pregnancy and to keep it that way during their pregnancy.

Dr. Cynthia Seow hopes the clinic will help women with irritable bowel disease realize they can be healthy through pregnancy and afterwards.
