Fourteen oil sands companies in Alberta are pooling their resources to form a new research organization.

It’s called COSIA, Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance.

And the goal is to accelerate the implementation of research findings to improve environmental and reclamation performance.

Dr. Garry Scrimgeour
is the director of the new land environmental priority area with COSIA.

DR. GARRY SCRIMGEOUR:
The COSIA model is unique. The CEO’s and other very senior managers have recognized that there are benefits of working together. And we call this leverage. Under the COSIA model companies will share technologies, technologies related to water processing, reclamation, remediation, greenhouse gases and tailings technologies. So it is about sharing ideas that will advance the sector as a whole. And that allows them to report on regional environmental performance improvements.

According to Dr. Garry Scrimgeour, COSIA builds on the collaborative success of the
Oil Sands Leadership Initiative, the Oil Sands Tailings Consortium, and CONRAD’s Environmental and Reclamation Research Group.
