Judging from the recent conference in San Francisco, anthropology is alive and well.

Over 6000 people participated in the annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association.

Dr. Leith Mullings
is the association’s President and herself a Distinguished Professor of Anthropology at City University of New York.

DR. LEITH MULLINGS:
You can find anthropologists now in all areas. There certainly are anthropologists that study in other places and do field work, typical Margaret Mead. But you can find anthropologists in medical schools, in non-profits, in corporations, working for the government. So anthropologists do a whole range of things.

Dr. Mullings gives this example of how the corporate world can benefit from anthropology.

DR: LEITH MULLINGS:
In fact, we just gave a prize last night to two people who had developed a model for General Motors to promote a better work place. And so they had worked with the workers. They had worked with the management. And they have written it up into a book and now other corporations are going to use it.

According to Dr. Leith Mullings, the American Anthropological Association has a worldwide membership of 11,658.
