It begins with tiny steps, but biomass may soon compete with coal and oil as sources of energy and chemical feedstocks.

Steve Price
is the man in charge of advancing Alberta’s bio economy with Alberta Innovates Bio Solutions. As he explains, we cannot miss this global movement.

STEVE PRICE:
If we look to Europe, no, we’re not quite at the same stage as Europe, but we’re not far behind. One of the problems that Europe is going to encounter is that they don’t have enough biomass to continue to produce all of the various chemicals and uses that they are currently engaged in. They are on a quest for biomass. The goal for us is to ensure that we don’t simply give biomass away to the Europeans. But rather encourage them to build new facilities, create new economic opportunity, new jobs in the bio economy here in Alberta.

Steve Price says biomass is also the source of nano crystalline cellulose, a plant material that can enhance oil recovery and strengthen aircraft materials.
