Integrating environment, economic and social concerns from a landscape perspective is the heart of Carol Bettac’s work.

Carol is the Executive Director of Strategic Alliances and Ecosystem Services with Alberta Innovates Bio Solutions.

CAROL BETTAC:
We’re looking at the data and the information and the gaps. We’re working to proof of concept basically a data and information management system. We are also working to develop an ecosystems services assessment process and helping to define what that might look like. And we’re working through a network of experts that’s led by the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute in order to do that. But coming out of that we’re also trying to do some applied proof of concepts working with the stakeholders on the landscape to see how these things might work. So it’s an applied process where we want to be practical and make sure some of the ideas work from a business perspective so that it can actually practicably be used in land use decision-making and whether it’s reclamation, remediation, or just off-setting kinds of processes.

Carol Bettac hopes to establish an network of experts to further the discussion and science around ecosystem services.
