Stem cell research in Alberta will take a big step forward with the arrival of Dr. Ina Dobrinski from the United States.

Among her many skills, Dr. Dobrinski is a veterinarian with an interest in reproductive biology.

Her cross appointment at the University of Calgary in medicine and veterinary science is supported through Alberta Innovates Health Solutions.

DR. INA DOBRINSKI: One of the draws for me was the fact that a new faculty of veterinary medicine was set up here at the University of Calgary a few years ago. And this faculty aside from having a lot of new ideas that were appealing to me, was also completely imbedded in the Faculty of Medicine. And that’s actually a very unique situation pretty much for all of North America. There’s very few universities that even have the two faculties on the same campus, but none that I know of where basically the research lab of a person working in veterinary medicine is next door to one working on the same or similar area in medicine.

Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions

Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions was established as part of the Alberta Innovates system by an Act of Legislation of the Government of Alberta. It is a agency  of the Government of Alberta. We receive a yearly allocation from the Ministry of Health and report through the ministry to the people of Alberta.

Our Mandate and Roles document reflects our role and responsibilities and outlines the government statues and regulations with which we comply.

Alberta’s Health Research and Innovation Strategy (AHRIS) sets out Alberta’s health research agenda for the coming decade to ensure our considerable investments in research align with our priority—to improve the health of Albertans.
