One of the finalists in this year’s Emerald Awards for Environmental Excellence was JK Trucking of Lethbridge.

In 2008, JK Trucking became the first company in Canada to integrate a 10.5 percent blend of biodiesel into its fleet.

And according to company president John Koliaska, the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is the equivalent of keeping 1500 cars off the road.

As John Koliaska explains, JK Trucking collaborated with Olds College to track the performance of its blend of biodiesel.

JOHN KOLIASKA:
We did a comprehensive study over a one year period tracking 2.5 million data points. There’s been zero negative aspects of any of that in terms of efficiencies or productivity with the bio diesel usage. On the flip side, maintenance intervals, soot and particulate buildup in the engine, have been reduced and no negative effects in terms of economy. So it’s almost a wash in terms of performance, if anything, slightly better and the benefits are for the environment with the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

John Koliaska says in the fall of 2010 his other company Kyoto Fuels will open a plant in southern Alberta and produce 66 million litres of biodiesel a year.
