Robert Murakami is the new Executive Director of the Alberta Ingenuity Centre for Machine Learning.

He’s also the President and CEO of the Centre’s new commercialization arm and that’s a company called Myriad Machine Learning

It’s Murakami’s job to bring researchers and investors together to help translate science into industrial applications.

ROBERT MURAKAMI:  Machine learning is the fundamental engine for analyzing and predicting large datasets,  much like predictability within a hospital environment, much like predicting whether or not the existing oil wells in this province are actually being managed efficiently.  Because it’s such a platform technology and because we know that information technology is growing at an enormous rate, and we now have a gazillion gazillion bytes of information floating around, how does all that get analyzed and now can we actually utilize it to create something better for people?

Through Myriad and the Alberta Ingenuity Centre for Machine Learning, Robert Murakami is also offering business bootcamps to university students to encourage entrepreneurship.

Alberta Ingenuity

Established in 2000, the Alberta Ingenuity Fund supports science and engineering research of the highest calibre, to create a prosperous future for the province of Alberta. It draws funding from a $1 billion endowment established in 2000 and managed by the Government of Alberta to build the capacity for innovation, especially in areas with long lasting social and economic impact.

Among its many programs, Alberta Ingenuity supports graduate students and university researchers, industrial research and commercialization partnerships, and has established several Centres and Institutes.

In January 2010, under the new Alberta Innovation Framework, Alberta Ingenuity was restructured and absorbed in the new agency Alberta Innovates Technology Solutions.
