The makers of SMART boards have a new home.

SMART Technologies
has opened its new headquarters in Calgary’s Research Park. And the building definitely lives up to its namesake.

The building is shaped like a half moon with three wings. And as CEO Nancy Knowlton explains, reducing environmental impact was a key element of the building’s innovative design.

NANCY KNOWLTON:
We attempted to recycle as much as we possibly could out of the waste that came from the construction process. The systems that we have put into place within the building will reduce by 50 percent the energy consumption that this building will have compared to a typical building that is not constructed to the LEED gold standard.

The new SMART Technologies building is also designed to accommodate a traveling workforce.

NANCY KNOWLTON:
They would have a hoteling concept. And so they might a set of file drawers that are on rollers they could just have access to when they walk in the door, a cubicle, and go and work from that space for that particular day.

Nancy Knowlton says this way, SMART Technologies could house up to 80 percent more staff in the same space.
