The physiotherapy that comes with recovery after an accident or the onset of disease can be tedious and mundane.

But Isabel Henderson hopes to change that with the addition of some futuristic high tech gadgetry.

Henderson is the senior operating officer at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital in Edmonton. A speech language pathologist by training, she is now fundraising to build the Courage Centre at the Glenrose.

Henderson calls it a hub of technology development and rehabilitation.

ISABEL HENDERSON: We see many opportunities for robots and robotic devices to help our patients. So they could be orthotics with robotic components. There could be robotics that assist children in play, perhaps seniors to interact with their environment. Even robotic caregivers. The second area is virtual reality and virtual rehabilitation moving into the gaming area So anything that can make it fun, make it entertaining. To really keep people motivated is really what we’re looking at there.

Isabel Henderson says the new Courage Centre will also include telehealth communications systems to link therapists with patients at home.
