The obesity crisis is hitting Canada’s children. . <\/p>\n

Dr. Paul Veugelers is determined to change that. A professor of public health at the University of Alberta, Dr. Veugelers also leads a program called APPLE. <\/p>\n

APPLE stands for Alberta Program Promoting Active Living and Healthy Eating. <\/p>\n

Since 2007, researchers have worked with 10 elementary schools to help children learn the healthy choice is the easy choice. <\/p>\n

DR. PAUL VEUGELERS: <\/strong>So you won’t see any sales of junk food in those schools. You will see instead posters in the hallway that are geared to the promotion of healthy eating, active living information. We aim to increase their knowledge levels to make better choices. We also engage them in taste testing and cooking lessons, We integrate physical activities into the classroom. Examples relate tomatoes,step counts for example, rather than to ice creams and TV programs. <\/em> <\/p>\n

The team of Dr. Veugelers works with families of APPLE students. And to date, has seen activity levels increase obesity decline. <\/p>\n

It is a agency  of the Government of Alberta. We receive a yearly allocation from the Ministry of Health and report through the ministry to the people of Alberta.<\/p>\n

Our Mandate and Roles document reflects our role and responsibilities and outlines the government statues and regulations with which we comply.<\/p>\n

Alberta’s Health Research and Innovation Strategy (AHRIS) sets out Alberta’s health research agenda for the coming decade to ensure our considerable investments in research align with our priority—to improve the health of Albertans.<\/p>\n
