{"id":39,"date":"2007-02-27T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2007-02-27T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.innovationanthology.com\/import\/2018\/02\/01\/innovation-anthology-13-professor\/"},"modified":"2018-02-25T21:29:42","modified_gmt":"2018-02-25T21:29:42","slug":"innovation-anthology-13-professor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.innovationanthology.com\/import\/2007\/02\/27\/innovation-anthology-13-professor\/","title":{"rendered":"Innovation Anthology #13: Professor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/innovationanthology.com\/uploads\/Innovation Anthology 013.mp3\">Download MP3 Link<\/a><\/p>\n<p> Creepy as they may seem, tent  caterpillars play an important role in the  renewal of aspen forests.   <\/p>\n<p>  Tent caterpillars feed on the leaves  of trembling aspen.    <\/p>\n<p> At the height of a tent caterpillar outbreak,  the biomass of these creepy crawlies  per square kilometer can be the equivalent of 657 caribou. <\/p>\n<p> Outbreaks go in 12 year cycles.  Repeated defoliation can eventually kill stands of aspen.    <\/p>\n<p> <strong>Dr. Jens Roland<\/strong> is an insect population  ecologist at the University of Alberta.   His research for the <strong>Sustainable Forest Management Network<\/strong> has looked at  how logging and agriculture undermine  natural enemies like parasites and viruses  in controlling tent caterpillar outbreaks.    <\/p>\n<p>  <em>JR: Historically we&#8217;ve found that the outbreaks of forest tent caterpillars tend to last longer in areas where the forest has been fragmented into smaller stands. So, in smaller stands, we get longer outbreaks. In larger, continguous stands, the outbreaks tend not to last quite as long.
