\nOsteoarthritis<\/b> can be painful, debilitating, and is very hard to treat.\n<\/p>\n

\nBut Dr. Michael Doschak\u2019s<\/b> research on calcitonin<\/b> is showing great promise.\n<\/p>\n

\nDr. Doschak is a member of Team Osteo Arthritis Alberta <\/b>funded by Alberta Innovates Health Solutions.\n<\/p>\n

\nAccording to Dr. Doschak, calcitonin is a peptide hormone the thyroid produces naturally to regulate bone metabolism.\n<\/p>\n


\nDR. MICHAEL DOSCHAK: <\/b>The beauty of calcitonin is that it\u2019s a natural way of telling these inflammatory triggered remodeling events to slowdown or even stop and then it will allow the body to recover over that period of time. However, we have become aware of a body of literature talking about the analgesic for pain relieving effects of calcitonin at the same time. So we were excited by the fact that we may have a compound with dual functionality. So it might be slowing the disease progression. And, in fact, our preliminary results seem to support that. <\/em>\n<\/p>\n

\nDr. Michael Doschak says calcitonin is just one of several biologics<\/b> or peptide-based treatments his team is developing.\n<\/p>\n
