{"id":1194,"date":"2012-06-26T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-06-26T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.innovationanthology.com\/import\/2018\/02\/01\/innovation-anthology-481\/"},"modified":"2018-02-25T21:30:35","modified_gmt":"2018-02-25T21:30:35","slug":"innovation-anthology-481","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.innovationanthology.com\/import\/2012\/06\/26\/innovation-anthology-481\/","title":{"rendered":"Innovation Anthology #481:"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/innovationanthology.com\/uploads\/Innovation Anthology 481.mp3\">Download MP3 Link<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\nThis year the <b>Emerald Foundation\u2019s<\/b> special<b> Challenge Award<\/b> focused environmental initiatives in the <b>oil sands<\/b>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nOne finalist was <b>Williams Energy Inc<\/b> of Fort McMurray.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nCompany president <b>David Chappell<\/b> describes their unique<b> off gas recovery system <\/b>that reduces greenhouse gas emissions.\n <\/p>\n<p><b><br \/>\nDAVID CHAPPELL:<\/b><em>  When a company takes the bitumen and turns it into synthetic crude oil, they put that in an upgrader to do that.    And in that process, they create a gas that\u2019s called an off gas.      That off gas contains methane  but it also contains a lot of other products, such as ethane, ethylene, propane, propylene, butane, and butylene.  And the ethylene and propylene and butylene they are actually basic petrochemicals that normally companies spend hundreds of millions of dollars to manufacture.    The oil sands companies are producing it as a by-product and the burning it as fuel.     Well what we do is we remove those higher value products.
