{"id":1095,"date":"2011-11-29T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-11-29T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.innovationanthology.com\/import\/2018\/02\/01\/innovation-anthology-437\/"},"modified":"2018-02-25T21:30:30","modified_gmt":"2018-02-25T21:30:30","slug":"innovation-anthology-437","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.innovationanthology.com\/import\/2011\/11\/29\/innovation-anthology-437\/","title":{"rendered":"Innovation Anthology #437:"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/innovationanthology.com\/uploads\/Innovation Anthology 437.mp3\">Download MP3 Link<\/a><\/p>\n<p> The<strong> Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute<\/strong> is a unique and ambitious program. <\/p>\n<p> Information on habitat, flora and fauna is collected from hundreds of sites 20 kilometers apart all across the province. <\/p>\n<p><strong> Dr. Jim Schieck<\/strong> is an ecologist with Alberta Innovates Technology Futures and scientific director of the <strong>Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p> Dr. Schieck says his group is discovering there are many uses for the data collected. <\/p>\n<p><strong> DR JIM SCHIECK:<\/strong><em> But we also found we could do a lot more with the data.  The information that we collected is the same kinds of information in fact,  its broader than what is collected  by any researcher that&rsquo;s doing a particular research project.  We collect information on many, many different taxa, a  whole diversity of habitats, and lots and lots of landscape information.  But we said  we can do more. So we can do things like help folks assess cumulative effects in a region or help folks assess things like recovery in areas that have been developed and then reclaimed.
