{"id":1074,"date":"2011-09-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-09-22T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.innovationanthology.com\/import\/2018\/02\/01\/innovation-anthology-427\/"},"modified":"2018-02-25T21:30:29","modified_gmt":"2018-02-25T21:30:29","slug":"innovation-anthology-427","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.innovationanthology.com\/import\/2011\/09\/22\/innovation-anthology-427\/","title":{"rendered":"Innovation Anthology #427:"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/innovationanthology.com\/uploads\/Innovation Anthology 427.mp3\">Download MP3 Link<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\nResearchers with <b>PrioNet and at the University of Alberta<\/b> have made an exciting new discovery about ALS or <b>Lou Gehrig\u2019s <\/b>disease.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThey\u2019ve shown that this neurodegenerative disease develops in the same manner as misfolded prion diseases like \u201cmad cow\u201d and Creutzfeld-Jacobs disease.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAs <b>Dr. David Wishart<\/b> from the U of A expains, the culprit is a protein called <b>super oxide dismutase.<\/b>\n<\/p>\n<p><b><br \/>\nDR DAVID WISHART: <\/b><em>Like the prion, the super oxide dismutase or SOD1 sometimes will spontaneously misfold.  When it does that, it will cause other SOD1 proteins to misfold.   And when they start misfolding they start clumping.  And when they start clumping, they start killing the cells that they are in.  And that cell death is what leads to the pathologies of Lou Gehrig\u2019s disease.
