Using Rural Connections to support Alberta’s Rural Development Strategy

10/28/2008

(EDMONTON) – Three Hills, Mayor, Kevin Edwards would like to invite all Albertans to the upcoming Communities Without Boundaries conference being held October 31st in Alberta.

"I say ‘in Alberta’ because it’s truly a unique event," Edwards said.  "Rather than everyone traveling to a single location, the conference is being held at more than 20 different sites across the province, linked together in an Alberta SuperNet-enabled videoconferencing network - places like Three Hills, Cold Lake, Hanna, Wainwright, Grande Prairie, Olds, High Level, Hinton and Vulcan.”

“You will be able to drive no more than 1.5 hours to join one of our video conference sites,” Project Manager Andy Blundell said.

For a list of all sites, the program, and lots more, please visit our web site at www.communitieswithoutboundaries.ca.

More than 25 presentations, from several of those rural communities, will take place, with every site enjoying fully interactive real-time participation throughout the whole day. The conference features real Albertans showing how they are using broadband – the SuperNet and high speed Internet – to bring real benefit to their families, businesses, schools and communities in real life, in rural Alberta, right now, every day. Local contact information is available on the web site.

You can also leave a comment in several places on our web site.  We are looking for opinions of Albertans interested in the impacts of broadband computing in rural settings.

The conference theme is “Using Rural Connections to Support Alberta’s Rural Development Strategy.” Four different topics will be explored throughout the day: Education, Health Care, Economic Activity, and Quality of Rural Life. The day will close with a panel discussion on how to get more Albertans better connected to the world online, across the sometimes challenging First mile of broadband.

If you can’t join one of our interactive video conference sites, you can explore our success at webcasting this event to your internet-connected computer. We will offer a live webcast during the event, and record a copy for later access. Full webcast information is available at our web site.

To register for either video conference participation or the webcast, please go to our web site.  Registration is absolutely free!
