And at an IPY workshop in Edmonton, he highlighted the excitement generated by the <b>Circumpolar Flaw Lead System Study. <\/b>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nLed by the University of Manitoba, this major study involves over 200 researchers from 15 countries.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThey\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re working from the Canadian icebreaker <b>Amundsen<\/b> which has overwintered in the Beaufort Sea.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe scientists are investigating the role of climate in changing the Flaw lead system.  This is the region where open water persists throughout the winter.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n DR. DAVID HIK:   One of the things they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve discovered is just  how dynamic that system is, things that you can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t see from satellites and that are not revealed when you are able to sample later in the season.  But having a presence there year round has given us a very different sense of just how dynamic those ice covered bodies of water are and how fluid the connections are between land and the marine system and how that influences wildlife and people.
