{"id":275,"date":"2008-03-25T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2008-03-25T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.innovationanthology.com\/import\/2018\/02\/01\/innovation-anthology-119-development-engineer\/"},"modified":"2018-02-25T21:29:51","modified_gmt":"2018-02-25T21:29:51","slug":"innovation-anthology-119-development-engineer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.innovationanthology.com\/import\/2008\/03\/25\/innovation-anthology-119-development-engineer\/","title":{"rendered":"Innovation Anthology #119: Development Engineer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/innovationanthology.com\/uploads\/Innovation Anthology 119.mp3\">Download MP3 Link<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\nTop honours for a star athlete means winning a gold medal at the Olympics.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nFor Canadian scientists, that stellar mark of excellence comes from winning the<b> Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering.<\/b>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nDuring his lifetime, Dr. Herzberg\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s many honours included the 1971 Nobel Prize in chemistry.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nWell, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s no surprise then that <b>NSERC, <\/b>the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada named this country\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s top science award after Herzberg.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAnd this year\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Herzberg Gold Medal goes to another Nobel Laureate, <b>Dr. John Polanyi.  <\/b>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nA professor of chemistry at the University of Toronto, Polanyi is a pioneer in chemical lasers.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nHis scientific inquiry led to the development of <b>reaction dynamics,<\/b> a method for better understanding how chemical reactions take place.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAt 79 years old,  Dr. Polanyi continues to research and publish his scientific discoveries.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nBut he is also known for his keen social conscience and interest in science policy.  He is a founding member of the Committee on Scholarly Freedom of the Royal Society.
