Along with her work tracking  Chronic Wasting Disease in mule deer, Dr Evelyn Merrill is involved in a large collaboration that will genotype resistance to the disease.<\/o_p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span>Dr Merrill is a Professor in Biological Sciences at the University of Alberta.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span>This collaboration is supported by Genome Canada and Alberta Innovates<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span>DR EVELYN MERRILL:  <\/span> And with that work we are actually incorporating how vulnerable certain genotypes of mule deer, whitetail deer, and other servids are  into our modelling processes.  So one area, if we have a higher frequency of genotypes in that area, and they’re the ones that are the most susceptible to the disease, then we expect to actually see it spread faster and increase in the population faster.  And we’re starting to map those genotypes across Alberta and part of Saskatchewan over the next four years.  <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/span>Dr Merrill says this collaboration iinvolves biologists, experts in genomics and proteomics, as well as social scientists.<\/span><\/p>\n
