Geothermal production has typically\u00a0<\/span>been located in areas subject to\u00a0<\/span>volcanoes and earthquakes.<\/span>

But new technology like that being<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>developed in Alberta will remove\u00a0<\/span>those limitations.<\/span>

Dr Jonathan Banks researches geothermal\u00a0<\/span>energy at the University of Alberta.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>

With funding from Alberta Innovates, his\u00a0<\/span>group has recently mapped potential spots\u00a0<\/span>for geothermal power production\u00a0<\/span>along the foothills.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>

DR JONATHAN BANKS: \u00a0<\/span> \u00a0There was a study published in 2014 that took the temperature data and overlaid assumed reservoirs in the subsurface. \u00a0W<\/span><\/span>e overlaid those reservoir maps onto the temperature maps and we were able to identify where potential reservoirs, high temperatures, and towns intersected. \u00a0Then we went into those areas and we quantified the amount of power that may be able to be produced from the thermal resources. \u00a0 We did that by using oil and gas well data that have porosity and bottom hole temperatures and pressures. \u00a0And then we did what is called a volumetric assessment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>

Dr Jonathan Banks says the mapping study shows great potential for Hinton, Grande Prairie and the region near Caroline and Rocky Mountain House.<\/span>
