{"id":2196,"date":"2017-03-21T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-03-21T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.innovationanthology.com\/import\/2018\/02\/01\/innovation-anthology-855\/"},"modified":"2018-05-10T03:22:05","modified_gmt":"2018-05-10T03:22:05","slug":"innovation-anthology-855","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.innovationanthology.com\/import\/2017\/03\/21\/innovation-anthology-855\/","title":{"rendered":"#855: Anthropology Of Handicrafts At Federal Indian Hospitals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/innovationanthology.com\/uploads\/Innovation Anthology 855.mp3\">Download MP3 Link<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; font-size: 11px; line-height: normal; font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Dr Sara Komarnisky is an anthropologist and Post Doctoral Fellow at the University of Alberta.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: normal; font-family: Arial; min-height: 12px;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: normal; font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Her research in public health introduced her to the tuberculosis crisis of the 1940&#8217;s and 1950&#8217;s, and the Indian hospitals set up by the federal government at that time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: normal; font-family: Arial; min-height: 12px;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: normal; font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">In Edmonton, for example, there was the Charles Camsell Hospital where patients produced thousands of pieces of artwork during their convalesence. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: normal; font-family: Arial; min-height: 12px;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: normal; font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"line-height: normal;\"><strong>DR SARA KOMARNISKY:&nbsp;<\/strong> <\/span><em>So there were hospitals like this across Canada.&nbsp; I think there were over 20 of them.&nbsp; So another part of my work is trying to document those hospitals as well, their handicraft programs, and try and learn a little bit about where those pieces ended up.&nbsp; For example, one that I&#8217;m working on is a set of carvings at the McCord Museum in Montreal.&nbsp; And those all came from the Parc Sivard Hospital in Quebec City.
