The Emissions Reduction Alberta Grand Challenge competitions are accelerating research into the conversion of waste carbon dioxide into products of value.<\/span>

That includes materials like concrete, new chemicals for plastics, and fuels<\/span> <\/span>

Steve MacDonald is ERA’s CEO.<\/span>

He says carbon conversion is potentially a trillion dollar market – and it could remove up to 7 billion metric tons of CO2 every year.<\/span>
 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

STEVE MCDONALD: <\/span> So for Alberta it does allow us to not only reduce CO2 emissions, but to cut costs   by reducing the amount of CO2 that is emitted, of course , and  then also water.  Most of the technologies also have a huge benefit around water usage.  So the new jobs, each of these industries will require all sorts of different pieces of the supply chain from fabrication of the new equipment required to do this.   And then the other thing is that we will start to build a bit of an ecosystem and  this is a growth area.  And so it really will be a catalyst to develop the market place even further.<\/span><\/span>  <\/span>

Steve MacDonald says so far,  Grand Challenge winners have received 24 million dollars in prize money for developing carbon conversion technologies.<\/span>
