University of Alberta scientist Dr. David Wishart is a pioneer in<\/span> <\/span>metabolomics research.<\/span>

In 2005, he spearheaded the Human Metabolome project.  The objective was to identify and catalogue thousands of metabolytes at work in the human body and their impact on our health.<\/span>

DR DAVID WISHART:<\/span>   Another milestone was the establishment of the Metabolomics Innovation Centre in 2011. And that is now is Canada’s National Metabolomics Laboratory and it involves several scientists and several labs at the University of Alberta, Victoria, and soon McGill and McMaster University.   And I think there’s been some really exciting discoveries and developments over the last few years.  The launch of several metabolomics companies partly from TMIC . One company called ChemomX, another company called Omics Analytics, Molecular You, and then Metabolomics Technologies Inc.  So there’s lots of things that have grown or emerged from this initiative.<\/span><\/span>

Dr. Wishart says the Metabolomics Innovation Centre recently received long term funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation, and is supported in part by agencies like Alberta Innovates and Genome Canada.<\/span>
