{"id":2175,"date":"2017-02-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-02-23T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.innovationanthology.com\/import\/2018\/02\/01\/innovation-anthology-848\/"},"modified":"2018-05-10T03:24:42","modified_gmt":"2018-05-10T03:24:42","slug":"innovation-anthology-848","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.innovationanthology.com\/import\/2017\/02\/23\/innovation-anthology-848\/","title":{"rendered":"#848: Dr. David Wishart:  Metabolomics, Environment and DNA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/innovationanthology.com\/uploads\/Innovation Anthology 848.mp3\">Download MP3 Link<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Metabolomics is a new science that uses metabolytes as bio-markers or indicators of health.<br style=\"\" \/><br style=\"\" \/>According  to Dr. David Wishart from the University of Alberta, metabolomics can  even identify changes in humans, animals and plants caused by exposure  to pollutants. <br style=\"\" \/><br style=\"\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">DR DAVID WISHART: <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">&nbsp;Another term  that people often use is &quot;epigenetics&quot; or &quot;epigenomics&quot;, which is  really another word for saying how the environment affects the genome.  &nbsp;And what you are exposed to, whether its chemicals or radiation, will  affect, in some cases, the DNA. &nbsp;It will affect the actions of cells, of  tissues and organs. &nbsp;They accumulate. &nbsp; I mean, there&#8217;s lots of  information we have about the accumulation of lead or mercury &nbsp;in fish  and in humans and in birds. Bisphenol-A, BPA, is another example of a  synthetic chemical that affects human fertility. Two applied research subsidiaries &#8211; Innotech Alberta and C-Fer Technologies &#8211;&nbsp; serve public and private sector interests.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_text et_pb_module et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_text_align_left  et_pb_text_2\">\n<p>The Alberta Innovates system was first created in January 2010, as  part of an overall innovation framework developed within the Alberta  Research and Innovation Act.
