HANS-JOACHIM WIEDEN: &nbsp;<\/span> &nbsp;<span style=\"font-style: italic;\">One of the key things is ownership. &nbsp;The  students are the source of the projects. &nbsp;It&#8217;s not me telling them, you  know this year we are going to do this. So everybody has ownership of  their project. &nbsp;And they pick topics of social relevance or that are  relevant to them or &nbsp;their communities. &nbsp; I mean, when you are looking  at the emergency vehicle thing, that affects everybody, &nbsp; Like, you  know, everybody has a connection to this. Two applied research subsidiaries &#8211; Innotech Alberta and C-Fer Technologies &#8211;&nbsp; serve public and private sector interests.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_text et_pb_module et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_text_align_left  et_pb_text_2\">\n<p>The Alberta Innovates system was first created in January 2010, as  part of an overall innovation framework developed within the Alberta  Research and Innovation Act.
