{"id":2139,"date":"2017-01-10T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-01-10T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.innovationanthology.com\/import\/2018\/02\/01\/innovation-anthology-836\/"},"modified":"2018-05-10T03:29:05","modified_gmt":"2018-05-10T03:29:05","slug":"innovation-anthology-836","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.innovationanthology.com\/import\/2017\/01\/10\/innovation-anthology-836\/","title":{"rendered":"#836: iGEM: ULeth Team Wins Gold In Boston"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/innovationanthology.com\/uploads\/1-Innovation Anthology 836.mp3\">Download MP3 Link<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once again students from the University of Lethbridge have come out on top at the iGEM World Jamboree at MIT in Boston.<br style=\"\" \/><br style=\"\" \/>iGEM is the International Genetically Engineered Machines Competition, with over 40 countries and 300 teams vying for the Gold Medal.<br style=\"\" \/><br style=\"\" \/>Taylor Sheahan is a PhD student at the University of Lethbridge. <br style=\"\" \/><br style=\"\" \/>Using  synthetic biology and bits of DNA, &nbsp;her team developed an antibody  based &nbsp;test strip to check for pathogens in emergency vehicles.<br style=\"\" \/><br style=\"\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">TAYLOR  SHEAHAN: <\/span>&nbsp; <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">So we were approached by the local fire department and EMS  because they were concerned with how clean their vehicles actually are,  the safety of their workers, and if they are, &nbsp; transporting these  pathogens back to their families. Two applied research subsidiaries &#8211; Innotech Alberta and C-Fer Technologies &#8211;&nbsp; serve public and private sector interests.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_text et_pb_module et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_text_align_left  et_pb_text_2\">\n<p>The Alberta Innovates system was first created in January 2010, as  part of an overall innovation framework developed within the Alberta  Research and Innovation Act.
