In 2013,  Orpyx Medical Technologies of Calgary won the TEC Venture Prize.<\/span>

Today, the company has commercialized its SurroSense RX medical device  and is working to develop its market.<\/span>

Orpyx CEO Dr. Breanne Everett says her product will reduce the risk of foot problems and amputation for patients with diabetes.<\/span>

DR BREANNE EVERETT: <\/span>This is a system which is comprised of a pressure sensitive insert that can be worn in the shoe.  And it collects data over time for the purpose of providing feedback to people that are affected by diabetic neuropathy.  And who have lost feeling in their feet and are at risk for ulcers and amputation.   What we do is we take data from the foot, we put that data through algorhythms that then provide activity based feedback to the wearer to prevent those really dreaded complications from happening.    And because the patient lacks that sensory feedback these complications develop and they can persist and recur, to the point where it costs the North American health care system about 16 billion dollars per year, and about 1 in 4 people with diabetes will develop wounds.<\/span><\/span>  <\/span>

Orpyx is currently piloting SurroSense RX with Alberta Health Services.<\/span>
