{"id":2020,"date":"2016-05-26T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-05-26T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.innovationanthology.com\/import\/2018\/02\/01\/innovation-anthology-785\/"},"modified":"2018-05-10T20:01:06","modified_gmt":"2018-05-10T20:01:06","slug":"innovation-anthology-785","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.innovationanthology.com\/import\/2016\/05\/26\/innovation-anthology-785\/","title":{"rendered":"#785: Dr. Marian Weber:  Indian Farm Creek Ecosystem Services Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/innovationanthology.com\/uploads\/Innovation Anthology 785.mp3\">Download MP3 Link<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Indian Farm Creek is a small watershed of 14 thousand hectares in southern Alberta near Pincher Creek.<\/p>\n<p>Only 2 percent of the region is natural habitat. &nbsp;The rest is taken up by agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>This  is &nbsp;where economist Dr. Marian Weber of Alberta Innovates is testing  the concepts of ecosystem services and tradable offsets to encourage  better land management.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">DR MARIAN WEBER: <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">&nbsp;So our objective in  this project was to develop and test some integrated science in decision  support tools for the evaluation of BMP&#8217;s. So these are &quot;Beneficial  Management Practices&quot; on things like biodiversity and water quality and  quantity. &nbsp;A BMP would be something like nutrient management. &nbsp;And then  the other part of the project is looking at what would be the  opportunities for producers to actually receive payments for undertaking  these practices, which are a cost to them.
