The advent of environmental impact assessments and conserving topsoil are two milestones in the history of land reclamation in Alberta.<\/span><\/p>\n

In his book on reclamation, author Robert Bott says this gives a promising message.<\/span><\/p>\n

ROBERT BOTT: <\/span><\/strong>  The message is, it can be done. That even extremely disturbed and extremely polluted sites –  like some of the old sulphur pads, originally they were just on the ground.  Or the mountain coal mines.  They basically are reshaping the landscape.  And yet if you go to south of Hinton, to the old Cardinal River mine, it’s a beautiful, beautiful lake surrounded by grass and trees and sheep and it’s just amazing what can be done.    But it takes time and money and people and planning.  And we’re getting behind.   Two-thirds of the pipelines in Alberta were laid since 1990.  So as a result, there’s this huge backlog of sites awaiting either reclamation or certification.  So it’s a big challenge.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
