Making patients an active part of health research is a novel approach to scientific investigation..

Dr. Virginia Vandall-Walke<\/span>r leads the Patient Engagement platform of a new program called SPOR: <\/span>Strategy for Patient Oriented Research.<\/p>\n

Here’s how she sees researchers and patients working together.<\/p>\n

DR VIRGINIA VANDALL-WALKER: <\/span> They could be involved right at the very beginning in priority setting where the researchers and the patients and clinicians get together and decide what are the burning research questions about this particular condition or this particular situation. They can be involved at the level of  discussing the different ways of approaching patients, the different ways to recruit patients, And they can be involved in analyzing data, especially if it’s qualitative data.  And they can been involved with taking the knowledge that has been learned and applying it in practice and sharing it with others like themselves.  And things then get translated into practice quicker.  <\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Vandall-Walker says SPOR is currently setting up a virtual portal for researchers and patients at ResearchAlberta.ca

Alberta’s Health Research and Innovation Strategy (AHRIS) sets out Alberta’s health research agenda for the coming decade to ensure our considerable investments in research align with our priority—to improve the health of Albertans.<\/p>\n
