Understanding what prevents people from donating organs for transplantation is just one of the issues Dr. Lori West <\/span>and her colleagues are researching.  <\/p>\n

Dr West is a professor, a cardiologist and a clinical scientist at the University of Alberta. <\/p>\n

With funding from Alberta Innovates Health Solutions, she recently helped  establish a country wide network for transplantation research. <\/p>\n

DR LORI WEST: <\/span> The nationwide program is called the National Transplant Research Program.  It’s unique in the world because it links the three communities of solid organ transplantation, bone marrow transplantation or hematopoietic cell transplantation, and donation critical care into a national research coalition. And the researchers involved in this national network include not just basic science research, but clinical research, health systems and policy research, population and cultural aspects of research, that all together have an impact on the important  health issues of our day, in this case, donation and transplantation. <\/span><\/p>\n

Dr West says funding from AIHS in the early stages  was crucial in relationship building to create the network.<\/p>\n

Alberta’s Health Research and Innovation Strategy (AHRIS) sets out Alberta’s health research agenda for the coming decade to ensure our considerable investments in research align with our priority—to improve the health of Albertans.<\/p>\n
