{"id":1826,"date":"2015-09-03T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-09-03T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.innovationanthology.com\/import\/2018\/02\/01\/innovation-anthology-712\/"},"modified":"2018-02-25T21:31:05","modified_gmt":"2018-02-25T21:31:05","slug":"innovation-anthology-712","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.innovationanthology.com\/import\/2015\/09\/03\/innovation-anthology-712\/","title":{"rendered":"Innovation Anthology #712:"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/innovationanthology.com\/uploads\/Innovation Anthology 712.mp3\">Download MP3 Link<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The coal fired generating plant at<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> Genesee<\/span> produces a high quality fly ash and it&#8217;s in high demand across North America.<\/p>\n<p>According  to <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Darren Alessandrini<\/span>, the concrete industry uses Genesee fly ash as a  replacement for Portland Cement in specialized engineering projects. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Darren is Senior Manager of Natural Resources and Business Development for Capital Power. <br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><br \/>DARREN  ALESSANDRINI: <\/span>&nbsp;<span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Essentially the chemistry of it is that fly ash is  what&#8217;s known as a polysan, And a polysan reacts in a certain way with  Portland cement in concrete to increase the reaction and fill in the  voids that Portland cement normally leaves. &nbsp; A big problem they have in  the States is something called alkali silica reactivity. &nbsp;So a lot of  the gravels &nbsp;they use there, if they don&#8217;t use our fly ash in the  concrete, the concrete will crack and spall over a number of years.
