As part of its coal mine extension project, Capital Power<\/span> has increased its current land base for the Genesee power plant from 18,000 acres to almost 30,000.
 
This involved acquiring agricultural land from 60 farmers and ranchers.  <\/p>\n

Darren Alessandrini<\/span> is Senior Manager of Natural Resources and Business Development for Capital Power. <\/p>\n

DARREN ALESSANDRINI: <\/span>  We did quite a bit of research on that and we determined that the best way to do that would be to offer them a premium on top of what the deemed market value was of their property. And it seemed to work.  I say that because every one of them, we were successful through friendly negotiation in acquiring their land.  <\/span><\/p>\n

As Darren explains, the good news is, before mining, the land will still be used for agriculture.

DARREN ALESSANDRINI:<\/span>   We said to ourselves, who  is the best steward of the land?  And it’s the farmer who’s got pride and history on this piece of land.  So in most cases we offered the farmer the right to lease the land back for x number of years at a very nominal rate.  From our perspective it was great because  they were the stewards of the land

According to Darren Alessandrini, Genesee already has in place a program for ecological reclamation after mining.<\/p>\n
